Invasive Aquatic Identification Training

Wednesday, July 20 with DLWA: Invasive Aquatic Plant Identification Training at the DLWA office in Jefferson from 2:30-8:30. There will be a ½-hour break. The primary goal of this comprehensive, 5 ½ -hour workshop is to provide those who wish to join Maine's "early detection" effort with information and guidance needed to get started. The training session is open to the public and FREE to anyone interested in learning more about the threat of invasive aquatic plants in Maine. The workshop is presented in four parts:

• Overview of invasive species issues in Maine and beyond
• Plant identification fundamentals
• Plant identification hands-on exercise with live plants
• Conducting a screening survey, tools and techniques

All workshop participants receive an “Invasive Plant Patroller’s Handbook,” and Maine's Field Guide to Invasive Aquatic Plants. Register online at:

DIRECTIONS: To reach DLWA office from the south, follow route 32 to Jefferson from its junction with US 1 in Waldoboro. Go through Jefferson Village on 32, pass Bond Bros. Lumber and Baptist Church. At the next intersection, bear left onto Rte 126, go about 50 yards, then turn left at the DLWA sign. Follow drive to bottom of the hill & park. The DLWA office is to the left.

BCC Background | 2007- Present

Since 2007 the BCC has dedicated itself to understanding the natural resources of Bremen and the conservation values and priorities of Bremen residents. Through numerous public forums and events the BCC determined a general public sentiment toward conservation which led to a lengthy process of developing a conservation plan consistent with the Comprehensive plan and public input. This plan established a baseline for where Bremen was in terms of protecting our natural resources and set forth strategies within the plan according to the four main points indicated within its mission statement.

In the latter half of 2010 the BCC began to realize that while many strategies in the Bremen Conservation Plan had been achieved, the most important work had yet to begin. In order to proceed the BCC needed to confirm conservation priorities and in January 2011 the BCC held an interactive public workshop to consider what types of projects might be considered if funded by the Bremen Land Conservation Reserve Fund (LCRF). Interestingly, this workshop affirmed what the BCC had already learned in earlier work. The results gave the commission a clear path in developing and undertaking conservation projects consistent with the conservation plan.
